Crestline Sidewinder Loop Trail – Why So Much Attention..

Crestline Sidewinder Loop Trail is a 9.6 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Boise, Idaho that features beautiful wild flowers and it is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs can also be able to use this trail.

Crestline is one of the best loops, which I recently realized joins with all the riparian trail which leads up into the Upper Hull’s Gulch area. It’s an attractive hike, just bring a lot of water during the summer time and look out for cyclists!

Good overall hike but not really a great area for birding. Only a few varieties and appearances on the day I was there. This trail seems better for biking than hiking and that’s mostly what you’ll see. This is a good length and relatively pretty if you like desert scenery. There is a really small forested area at the beginning. The task level is probably near easy though with a route for enough time to deter small kids. The inclines are very mild compared to other moderate rated desert trails like Harrison Hollows.

Great trail system with access from several different starting points. Strongly suggest. Great for all ability levels, based on your alternatives needless to say. Best trail for dog lovers! The Military Reserve has an off leash dog park and a lot trails are off leash. Take advantage of the wildflowers in April & May! One of the need to do trails within the Boise Foothills, Sidewinder is really a nice climb, great view, and a fun downhill. A bit crowded on weekends.

Here are a few strategies for dynamite hikes, trail-runs and bike rides within the Boise foothills. The guidelines result from my trail guides, Mountain Biking in Boise and Boise Trail Guide. It’s vital that you focus on the mid- to reduce foothills trails in the early spring. Top of the trails and the Boise Ridge Road are still snow-bound. The trails inside the mid- to upper foothills, like the Watchman Trail, continue to be wet and greasy in a few places, so it’s best to wait so they can dry completely. Before you decide to hit the trails, have a look at current trail conditions on the Ridge to Rivers website.

Military Reserve Short Loop – 2 miles, lower than one hour hiking time. Easy, with a short hill. Here’s a shorter tour for families and small kids. Start on the Toll Road Trailhead from Mountain Cove Road. Go up the Toll Road Trail under a mile to a junction. Go left and ascend for the initial summit of Military Ridge. Turn left and descend on the singletrack trail resulting in Freestone Creek Trail over from the dirt road. Turn left on Freestone and return to the trailhead.

Seaman’s Gulch Double Loop – 3 miles total. 1 hours hiking time; 30-45 minutes running time; 30 minutes riding time. Easy. Take Hill Road west in Boise towards the Seaman’s Gulch/Hidden Springs right-hand turnoff. Go right and follow Seaman’s Gulch Road to a great paved parking area and restroom alongside a big water tank. Go ahead and take Valley View Trail #111 to the right, and after that consider the first left on Trail #110 to Phlox Trail #112, turn left and go back to the trailhead for a one-mile short loop. Now return on Valley View, whilst keeping going out to the actual “valley view” viewpoint supplied by the trail, hanging higher than the Boise Valley. The trail loops around to fknihd and returns towards the trailhead.

Cross-Foothills Ride (Intermediate; strenuous in places) – 10 miles. two hours riding time. Strong intermediate. Today, I rode approximately the Corrals Trail (trailhead is 1.8 miles north of Curling Drive on Bogus Basin Road), rode Corrals to Corrals Summit, and then rode downhill on Corrals and Trail #1 up to Hulls Gulch. Then I took Crestline Sidewinder Loop Trail to Military Reserve, and dropped out on the Freestone Creek Trail in Military Reserve near Fort Boise. The toughest area of the ride is climbing to Corrals Summit (3 miles uphill from trailhead, 1,200 feet of vertical gain). Then it’s mostly downhill to Military Reserve, with a few uphill sections in between. Fun ride! Hardy mountain trail runners would enjoy that route also.

Crestline-Hulls Loop – 7.25 miles. Moderate. 2.5 hours hiking time; 1.5 hours running time; 1.25 hours riding time. Intermediate. Start from Camelsback Park in Boise on N. 13th. Discover the trailhead behind the tennis courts. Climb on Owls Roost and Kestrel to Crestline. Follow Crestline to the Hulls Gulch Junction. Turn left and descend on Hulls Gulch. It’s rocky and uneven in places. When you reach the 8th Street trailhead from the Foothills Learning Center, turn right, cross 8th Street, and finish the ride on Red Fox Trail, which leads you back to Camelsback Park.

Variations on Crestline-Hulls Loop – Advanced. Ride the loop in reverse, or climb Hulls. It’s difficult, but fun! Another favorite of mine is always to start at Camelsback Park, climb Hulls to the Crestline junction, ride Crestline returning to the Sidewinder trailhead, climb Sidewinder, come down Trail #4 towards the Hulls Crestline junction, and descend Hulls and Chickadee Ridge returning to Camelsback.
